Assessment and treatment for conditions that live in the brain's networks, not on a scan. Our evidence-based program uses advanced neuroimaging and neurofeedback to address what standard testing misses.
At Applied Psychology Centre, we begin by working to understand each person's specific issues, concerns, symptoms, circumstances, and contributing factors. Our recommendations follow from that individualized assessment — not from a standardized treatment pathway. No two clients receive exactly the same combination or sequence of services.
We specialize in the assessment and treatment of selected functional neurological disorders (FND). These conditions arise from disrupted communication within the brain's functional networks, and cannot be detected by approaches that examine anatomy alone.
Because these conditions are rooted in how brain networks communicate rather than in visible structural damage, they are frequently missed or misattributed.
Our program is built to identify the specific circuits involved and to treat the disorder at the level where it actually operates.
Applied Psychology Centre examines how brain function, thoughts, emotions, behaviour, and physical responses interact — drawing on psychology, psychophysiology, and, where appropriate, quantitative EEG (qEEG) to do so. The findings shape each client's individualized recommendations.
Because our assessment maps how your brain's networks are actually communicating, treatment can be aimed at the specific circuits involved rather than at symptoms in isolation. That is what makes this program very different from a standard treatment pathway.
Our program addresses a range of functional neurological presentations, each rooted in disrupted network dynamics rather than structural pathology.
Chronic digestive symptoms driven by dysregulated gut-brain network communication rather than structural GI pathology.
Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) and related balance disturbances arising from vestibular network dysfunction.
Tremor, dystonia, and gait disturbances that originate in motor network dysregulation rather than neurodegenerative disease.
Numbness, tingling, and visual changes caused by disrupted sensory processing networks in the absence of peripheral nerve damage.
Brain fog, dissociation-related cognitive lapses, and long-COVID cognitive difficulties linked to network-level disruption.
Our approach draws on psychology, psychophysiology, and — where appropriate — quantitative EEG (qEEG, a way of mapping brain-wave activity) to examine how brain functioning, thoughts, emotions, behaviour, and physiological responses interact. These findings are then used to develop an individualized plan. Not every client's plan looks the same: what we recommend, and in what order, depends on what the assessment reveals.
We begin with electro-imaging using QEEG and EEG-based network analysis, combined with thorough psychological and neurocognitive testing. This multi-modal assessment identifies the range, severity, and specific neural networks underlying each person's symptoms — providing the diagnostic clarity that standard imaging cannot.
The result is a detailed functional map of your brain's connectivity patterns, revealing precisely where timing, synchronization, or regulation has broken down.
Guided by the evaluation findings, we use advanced multichannel neurofeedback (neurofeedback that trains multiple brain regions and their interactions at once, rather than a single site) to retrain the interactive brain networks that underlie the disorder. This is not single-site neurofeedback — it targets the dynamic relationships between multiple brain regions simultaneously.
The goal is to restore the self-regulation capacity of disrupted circuits, reducing symptoms by addressing their neurological source rather than managing them at the surface level.
Functional neurological symptoms are increasingly recognized across a wide range of populations. They are particularly prevalent among people recovering from concussion and traumatic brain injury, those experiencing persistent symptoms following long-COVID, and individuals with significant stress or trauma exposure.
This is especially relevant to Kingston's significant CFB Kingston military and veteran community, as well as first responders and correctional services workers, who often experience functional neurological symptoms connected to occupational stress or injury. These populations frequently present with symptoms that standard medical workups cannot explain — precisely the kind of network-level disruption our program is designed to identify and treat.
Our program serves anyone experiencing functional neurological symptoms, regardless of background. Whether your symptoms emerged after an injury, an illness, prolonged stress, or without a clear precipitant, the same evidence-based assessment and treatment approach applies.
Many people come to APC after other treatments, therapies, or medications have not sufficiently reduced their symptoms or improved their functioning. Our more comprehensive assessment can help clarify the factors contributing to ongoing difficulties and identify a practical path forward for those who feel stuck or have not achieved the improvement they'd hoped for.
Physicians and other healthcare professionals frequently refer patients to APC when difficulties continue despite treatment or earlier referrals. Referring professionals value APC's scientifically grounded, assessment-based approach, and refer patients for APC to assess and work with directly. Where appropriate, APC can collaborate with the referring physician or professional while providing services to the patient.
